Deepfakes: weapons of mass illusion?

Deepfakes are disrupting the digital cultural landscape and gradually imposing a manipulated representation of reality. For worse, but also for better, synthetic media will accompany us in the coming decades. Deepfakes: weapons of mass illusion?

Deepfakes are disrupting the digital cultural landscape and gradually imposing a manipulated representation of reality. For worse, but also for better, synthetic media will accompany us in the coming decades. To better understand the phenomenon, I invite you to discover this synthesis work published in early 2019.

Here, I study the treatment of synthetic media (deepfakes) in the news and social media by journalists and practionners. How do deepfakes influence digital culture in all its components, from the production of content to its distribution? What is the legal framework in which they operate? What about the political understanding of the social issues that deepfakes raise?

Synthetic media .

Since 2017, deepfakes have been generating a lot of reactions whether from journalists, lawyers, media experts, or politicians. These synthetic media, created with the help of artificial intelligence, present many challenges. They question our way of seeing the world and of believing what is reported to us. They disturb our vision of reality, question facts, and information, our intimate relationship to image, sound, to our senses, to others, and progressively blur our perception of bodies, of their digital representation, and disrupt our vision of our own image. The gradual diffusion of synthetic media in all spheres of web, film, and television culture – requires us to consider in a new light the circulation of these media, their authentication, and the means we will implement to contextualize and regulate the use and flow of modified content.

The news about deepfakes is becoming more and more important as the term spreads in the public space. The objective here is therefore to approach this new phenomenon in all its dimensions, technical, legal, economic, philosophical. I started this research work on synthetic media in January 2018 first for myself, then more seriously, today I share it.
