Deepfakes, disinformation

Since 2018, deepfakes and now synthetic realities have raised many concerns. Their impact on the news and their authenticity questions again the role of the journalists and the media. Let's get ready for the synthetic wave.

New weapons of mass illusion ?

The world becomes synthetic.

Since 2017, deepfakes have been causing a lot of reactions whether from the side of information professionals as well as lawyers, media experts or politicians. These synthetic media, modified by artificial intelligence algorithmes, present many challenges.

They question our way of seeing the world and of believing what is reported to us. They disturb our vision of reality, question facts and information, our intimate relationship to image, to sound, to our senses, to others, gradually disrupting our perception of bodies, of their digital representation and disturbing the relationship to our image.

The progressive diffusion of synthetic media in all spheres of web, film and television culture – require us to consider in a new light the circulation of these media, their authentication and the techniques and knowledges we will implement to contextualize and regulate the use of modified content.

The news about deepfakes is becoming more and more important as the term spreads in the public space. The objective here is to critically approach this new phenomenon in all its dimensions, technical, legal, economic, philosophical, in order to share it with as many people as possible.
