Hollywood seeks its synthetic double
From the 8 o’clock news to the movie sets, there is only one step. In the next few years, the synthetic version of the 7th art will surely be enriched by creation techniques assisted by the same tools that produce deepfakes today. The quest for the perfect digital lookalike is stirring up the whole of Hollywood and giving rise to a few blockbusters that are still a little hesitant. More recently, Matt Stone and Trey Parker opened their Deep Voodoo studio and brought together the biggest names in deepfakes creation. The production of their new series Sassy Justice features a larger-than-life synthetic double of Donald Trump. At the center of all these digital manipulations are the actors and actresses who serve as material for the GANs’ algorithms. Deepfakes are about to upset the profession and its balance and we can hardly imagine the collateral effects of these new techniques.
Robin Wright eternal

To begin with, let’s take up the story of Robin Wright and the initial promise made to her in the film. Eternity. A fake eternity of course, only her image will be eternal. Who is able to accept the use of the image of the deceased? Who has the right to the image of a deceased person? The management of the image is one thing, but what to do when one adds the word to it? Making a living person younger or older also raises a whole host of questions. To draw a parallel with The Congress, an actor must first give his consent to be fully scanned. Then he must decide how long to keep this data, by whom? By whom? How? Then the voice. Do deepfakes announce the end of dubbing? The digital capture of voice, image, expressions, body movements, gait represents a considerable volume of synthetic data, but also a very important commercial stake. We can easily imagine databases where each actress and each actor will be listed and classified according to a new typology: deepfake double or IRL actor. The development of such services, if they are successful, will quickly spread to the whole population who will not hesitate to pay a few euros to give up the photos of their Facebook album in exchange for a credible synthetic double. It is a question of opening the debate so that each one can understand the stakes which are profiled in a world populated by synthetic media.
